The video based on which the suo motu case was registered by cops KOLKATA: The Barrackpore police on Tuesday registered a suo motu case and started probe in a March 2021 assault video of a "woman" being brutally thrashed at Ariadaha Taltala Sporting Club by some club members on suspicion of being a thief. Two persons in the video - Subhas Das alias Suman and Abhishek Burman alias Chottu - have been arrested in the case.Another person - Bappa - has been detained on Tuesday evening in connection with the assault.
According to locals, all accused are members of the club and associates of local goon Jayanth Singh, who along with his eight henchmen, have been arrested in connection with the recent attack on July 1 on a college student Sayandip Panja and his mother Bubun.
In the fresh video shared by BJP West Bengal president Sukanta Majumdar on Monday, some persons are seen holding a "woman" by her legs and hands and beating her up at the club at ward 11 in Kamarhati Municipality. According to police, the "woman" had been caught by some club members from a market over an alleged bike theft and she was later handed over to Belgharia police in March, 2021.
The FIRs were lodged against eight persons seen in the video under sections 341(wrongful restraint), 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt). Sources said some of them were identified as Rahul Gupta, Shibam Gupta, Saikat Manna alias Jangha, Prasen Das alias Laltu, Subhas Das alias Suman and Abhishek Burman alias Chottu. "Two, including Manna, were arrested in connection with the July 1 attack. They are now in police custody," a senior officer said.
Gopal Saha, chairman of Kamarhati Municipality, said: "Irrespective of political colours, the accused should be given exemplary punishment."
"Absolutely appalled by the emerging video from Taltala Club, Kamarhati, showing Jayanth Singh, a close associate of TMC MLA Madan Mitra, brutally attacking a girl," Majumdar posted on his X handle. Kamarhati MLA Mitra rubbished the allegation of his proximity with the accused. Sagarika Ghose, Trinamool's" Rajya Sabha MP, posted on X: "Bengal govt is clear: Zero tolerance on crimes. All those seen in videos committing criminal acts have been booked and will continue to be booked..."
