The vehicle broke two signals, drove into a building only to re-emerge and climbed onto a pavement even as it hit a car and two bikes before falling into a drain near a popular department store.

As the sedan came to a stop, locals surrounded it and tried to drag the driver out. "But local police and the traffic personnel stopped them and rescued the motorist," said an officer.

There was no one else in the vehicle. The driver was arrested and taken to the Shakespeare Sarani police station. He was not drunk, said police, adding that he claimed he was mentally not well.

The injured policemen and the bikers, on whom the two bikes had fallen, were taken to Belle Vue. The condition of all the injured was stated to be stable.

The incident took place near 22, Camac Street, a high-security zone, given its proximity to state govt offices, the US consulate and shopping zones, police said.

Police said the check naka had just been set up at 8.30pm. The sedan, police said, was coming at a high speed from Park Street.

Suspicious, cops at the checkpoint waved at the driver, asking him to slow down. The vehicle did slow down but as police officers approached the motorist, asking him to roll down the window pane for a breathalyzer test, he stepped on the accelerator.

The vehicle hit the traffic sergeant and the three other cops-two of them traffic home guards-who were standing nearby, and then, swerved left, hitting three parked cars. The sedan, unable to stop, dashed into the guard rails and climbed onto the pavement. Policemen, who ran to the spot, ordered the driver to stop. He was dragged out and taken to the police station.

Till reports last came in, the motorist was still being questioned. Police declined to comment.
