  • Kolkata: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) will install 1,000 LED street lights in different areas of Salt Lake. The state govt had recently approved Rs 2.9 crore for the civic body to replace the conventional street lights with LED lights in the entire township and adjoining areas under the state’s green cities mission. The funds have been approved for installation of the lights in BMC wards 29 to 41—covering Salt Lake and wards 1 to 7, covering Rajarhat-Gopalpur in areas surrounding the airport.

While 500 LED panels will be of 120 watt capacity, the remaining ones will be of 70 watt. Officials said the bid documents would be opened for technical evaluation and scrutiny as the lights were expected to be supplied by the selected agency. The civic body will start installing the street lights as required from early next month.

Of late, the street lights are not functioning properly at several stretches on roads in Salt Lake. While power is supplied by the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL), BMC is responsible for maintaining the lighting system along with the poles.

“We are indeed facing some problems regarding street lights. Meetings have been held to resolve the issue. We have already procured 5,000 lights from our own funds and another 1,000 lights will be procured,” said BMC mayor, Krishna Chakraborty. Presently, there are around 30,000 LED street lights across BMC area.
