  • Kolkata: Out of 4.2 lakh students who have been allotted UG seats on the first merit list, the first day saw over 10,000 taking admission through the centralized portal. The rest have time till July 18 to take admission. Another 1.5 lakh, who had also applied for admission, will have to wait for seat allotment till the second round, which is scheduled on July 23.

A higher education department official explained that nearly 1.5 lakh students could not be allotted seats on the first merit list because several students had applied for fewer colleges and courses instead of 25 options. “Students have given first preference to some colleges that are already overcrowded. But as the list was prepared as per merit, these students with comparatively lesser percentage could not be allotted seats in the first round. They will have to wait till the second round,” the official said.

Those who will take admission against the allotted seats will be given an upgrade option during admission. “They must opt for the upgrade option,” said an official. Institution-wise and course-wise seat allotment in the upgradation round will be published on July 23.

Some college principals shared that the seat allotment in the first round against their seat capacity has been good. Surendranath College principal Indranil Kar said: “Around 70% seats have been allotted in the first round in my college, which is much higher if we consider the previous years.” New Alipore College Principal Jaydeep Sarangi felt that the response had been massive. “The total seat capacity is nearly 2700. Out of which more than 1,300 students have been allotted seats this year through the portal,” he said.

At Lady Brabourne College, 575 seats were allotted out of 750 seat capacity. “The full picture will be clear after the first round,” said principal Siuli Sarkar. Manas Kabi, Asutosh College principal, said 2583 seats had been alloted out of 3,330. At Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri College, 750 out of 1200 seats have been allotted, said principal Pankaj Roy.
