  • Kolkata: Two persons were arrested on Saturday by Cossipore PS cops for assaulting a promoter, Abhijit Sarkar, and ransacking his office near Sinthee crossing late on Friday after trying to extort Rs 5 lakh from him. Sarkar has been hospitalised.

A video of the attack was circulated on Saturday, leading to prompt police action. “Some locals, Avijit Mondal alias Rana, Sayanrup Banerjee alias Roop, Kanu alias Waljiit, Bishal Deb, Supriodeep Majumder and Sudipta alias Ripu, barged into the office and assaulted Sarkar as they demanded Rs 5 lakh to evacuate an old tenant. When Sarkar refused, they ransacked his office, stole around Rs 2 lakh and a platinum ring. Two persons have been arrested and a hunt for the others is on,” said additional CP (I) Murlidhar Sharma. Kanu and Jiten Kumar Pal were arrested, but main accused Rana is at large.

Sarkar claimed the accused said they were Trinamool workers and were close to MLA Atin Ghosh. But Atin said, “I know Rana and I thought he was educated. But I haven’t had contact with him recently. I am not aware of the case, but I will talk to party seniors. Steps will be taken.” “I am not aware of the Sinthee-Cossipore case, nor know who is driving a JCB,” Firhad Hakim said.
