  • Kolkata: More than 75,000 students out of 4.2 lakhs, who have been allotted UG seats on the centralized admission portal, took admission till Saturday. But higher education officials said there was still confusion among students about the process, especially the seat upgrade procedure. The first merit list was published on Friday.

Higher education officials and college principals pointed out that they were getting queries about seat allotment and the upgrade process from students, some of whom have not understood the concept of preferences and choices.

Surendranath College principal Indranil Kar said: “There are students who have not understood the concept of preferences and choices. They had randomly chosen colleges. Now when they have been allotted seats at a college that they had given as first preference, they do not wish to take admission. They are thinking that they will be able to upgrade. But we have told them to take admission or they will lose the chance.”

A higher education official also said students were not able to understand that once a seat is allocated, they must secure admission. They will have the upgrade opportunity later if desired. He explained: “Some students might think that they can upgrade even if they do not take admission in the allocated seat. In reality, that will not happen.” He added that those who are alloted seats in round one and not opting for admission will have to submit revised preference during round two that starts from Aug 8.
