Kolkata: Probing into the assault and manhandling of a north Kolkata promoter, cops arrested the main FIR-named person, Abhijit Mondal alias Rana, and three of his aides on Sunday from Kharagpur while he was attempting to flee to Odisha, police said.
A group of attackers assaulted promoter Abhijit Sarkar and ransacked his Sinthi office late on Friday after he refused to pay Rs 5 lakh extortion money.The attackers damaged the CCTV cameras to wipe off evidence. Finally the goons broke a drawer of his office and left with Rs 2 lakh.
Officers of the anti-rowdy squad of Kolkata Police raided a hideout in Kharagpur and arrested Mondal and his aides Sayan Banerjee, Vishal Deb and Manu Pandey. They were produced before a Sealdah court which sent them to police custody till Thursday. So far, 6 persons have been arrested in this case.
Sarkar is still in hospital. The video of the attack went viral, prompting cops to act quickly. The promoter claimed the attackers had identified themselves as ruling party workers and even claimed to be close to Kashipur-Belgachia MLA Atin Ghosh.
Ghosh said he knew a person named Rana but didn’t know he was an extortionist. He said he would also ask police to take strict action against the men and would apprise the party leadership about them.
