  • Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Monday asked St Xavier’s University to disclose whether any student having between 65% and 75% attendance was debarred from appearing in the semester exam.

The court refused to immediately pass an order following a plea by a student pursuing BCom LLB at the varsity. He sought permission to get admitted in the seventh semester, from which he was debarred for shortfall in attendance.

Due to the student’s delay in seeking court intervention, Justice Amrita Sinha declined to issue an interim order. The HC said he should have approached the court immediately after he was denied to take the May 2024 exam.

The student contended that he was unable to attend classes due to medical reasons, resulting in 64.9% attendance. It was argued that he could have achieved over 65% attendance if his participation in a competition where he represented the university had been considered. If the attendance was between 65% and 75%, the shortfall could be condoned upon payment of required charges, it was said. The HC directed the university to file an affidavit-in-opposition in this regard.
