  • Kolkata: The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) is planning to conduct another drive from Thursday to clear pavement encroachments in New Town. The authorities have instructed street vendors and hawkers to shift to the hawker rehabilitation stalls as NKDA plans to set up more such stalls in the township. “Eviction drives are being conducted to clear only new encroachments.A negotiation process is on with those who have been doing business for years,” said an official. With the hawkers shifting out and the makeshift stalls being dismantled, authorities have already cleared a few stretches in New Town.

“Around 900 hawker rehab stalls have been set up and work is on to set up around 800 more stalls across Action Area II and III. A survey is also being conducted to find out the number of hawkers doing business in New Town,” added the official.
