  • Kolkata: Jadavpur University is enforcing the rule of not allowing non-boarders to stay at hostels overnight.

“No non-boarder will be allowed to stay as guests at hostels. If students are found with a non-boarder unofficially, strict action will be taken against them and the students’ right to stay a hostel might be cancelled,” said a senior official, adding in a special situation, one must seek official approval from the authority for temporary stay of a non-boarder at hostels.

Though this rules of not allowing non-boarders at hostels at night has always been in place, it was rampantly violated. It was only after the death of a fresher at the Main Hostel in Aug 2023 that the issue was dug up.

JU has also streamlined its hostel system this year, allotting hostel facility to more number of first-year students at the time of admission. “Earlier, fewer students got hostel allotment during admission. Many were put on wait for at least two months after interviews were held. This time, the university has decided to allot hostels to 70% students during admission so that freshers do not have to approach seniors to stay at hostels unofficially,” said an official.

Students of all years will also have to sign an anti-ragging affidavit every year.
