  • Kolkata: Eastern Railway has decided to immediately build 14 road overbridges (ROB) to replace level crossings in various stations, including Khardah where a major accident was averted on Sunday when a train hit a car that had defied the level crossing’s signal.

The proposed ROBs will come up at Barasat, Titagarh, Khardah, Barrackpore, Habra, Ichhapore, Baruipur, Sode-pur, Dum Dum Cantonment and Kalyani.

On Sunday, an SUV had passed below a closing level-crossing gate near Khardah station and collided with a decelerating express train. On Monday, DRM, Sealdah, Deepak Nigam said, “Sunday’s incident notwithstanding, detailed project reports have been submitted for ROBs at various stations, including Khardah.”

“On an average, Rs 250 crore will be spent on each ROB. We shall seek the state govt’s NOC,” an official said. Officials said Barasat is a priority and has been allocated two ROBs.
