  • Kolkata: A fire broke out at a 8th floor flat in an 12-storey building called Orange tower at Sunrise Point housing complex in New Town on Thursday afternoon.

The fire caused initial panic trapping a group of residents on the upper floors before the internal security guards of the complex and firemen could evacuate the residents and douse the flame and smoke.

“It looks like an electrical short circuit inside one of the one BHK LIG homes at the building. There was a lot of smoke and a woman had to be taken to a hospital after she complained of smoke inhalation and breathlessness. She was released after first aid. None were injured,” said Gobindo Biswas, secretary of the housing complex.

Six fire tenders rushed to the complex situated near Akankha intersection in New Town’s Action Area II.

Due to damage to the main wiring line, electricity could not be restored to the affected tower until late Thursday. The fire department has launched an investigation, a fire official said.
