  • Kolkata: Two skulls and a bone, smeared with vermilion, were recovered from a private property at Kasba’s Kamala Park on Sarat Ghosh Garden Road. The incident sent shockwaves through the densely populated neighbourhood near Haltu.

“The skulls and bone have been sent for postmortem and DNA profiling,” said DC (Jadavpur) Bidisha Kalita. The rear portions of the skulls were broken. The bone is likely to be from the elbow. A burial ground is located around 250 to 300 metre from the spot, where the parts were found.

The cops stated that there was an under-construction building that had been lying unfinished for the past several years. “The land became disputed and the construction was stopped. The owners stay at a different place in Kasba. Since the site had become dirty, the owner decided to approach KMC and ask them to clean it after depositing the fee. The skulls and bone were recovered when the civic workers were cleaning the site near the entrance around 8 pm on Wednesday. They informed the owner, who alerted the police on Thursday.

Police sources said prima facie, it did n’t appear that any murder or criminal incident had occurred at the spot and the skeletal parts were likely to have been brought from outside. “Given the vermilion mark, tantric rituals cannot be ruled out,” said an officer.

Police said CCTV footage was being examined to see if outsiders had trespassed the site. “So far, the neighbours have not been able to shed much light,” said an officer from Kasba PS.
