  • KOLKATA: A good number of people with diabetes develop foot infections which may require amputation. But such drastic measures can be prevented with newer modalities of treatment in vascular surgery. West Bengal has a relatively higher prevalence of hypertension and diabetes - leading causes of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), putting many vulnerable to developing this condition which may lead to amputations.

On Friday a team from Medanta, Gurugram, touched down in Kolkata to share about the advancement in vascular surgery and its role in preventing amputations and strokes in diabetes patients. The doctors also emphasized on the importance of early diagnosis for optimizing treatment outcomes.

“The treatment of vascular diseases, especially in diabetic patients, has advanced significantly with the introduction of new technologies. Techniques like the Penumbra System and Genicular Artery Embolization have made it possible to significantly improve patient outcomes. Empowering individuals with knowledge about these advancements and stressing the importance of early diagnosis is paramount,” said Dr Rajiv Parakh, Chairman, Peripheral Vascular and Endovascular Sciences at Medanta, Gurugram, during a press conference in Kolkata.

According to a 2021 ASSOCHAM report on the burden of non-communicable diseases in India, the prevalence of hypertension is 5.13% in West Bengal, against the national average of 3.6%. Similarly, the prevalence of diabetes in the state is 3.53%, against the national average of 2.85%.

A blocked blood supply to the leg causes a ‘leg attack,’ similar to a ‘heart attack’ or a "brain attack," which can lead to strokes or paralysis. Preventing leg and brain attacks can save lives and avoid severe complications.

Dr Parakh said that the cutting-edge technologies like the advanced AI guided Penumbra System, selectively removes blood clots from the lungs to prevent collapse.

“Genicular Artery Embolization, a minimally invasive procedure that alleviates chronic knee pain by reducing blood flow to inflamed areas; and Prostate Artery Embolization, which treats benign prostatic hyperplasia by shrinking the prostate through restricted blood flow,” said the doctor.

The Gurugram based hospital has also started multispecialty OPD clinics in Kolkata.
