  • Kolkata: Over 3.6 lakh students have deposited admission fees till Friday afternoon, out of the 4.2 lakh students, who were on the first merit list.

The seven-day admission window under the Centralized Admission Portal (CAP) ended on Friday.

There is around a 60,000-gap between those featured in the first merit list and the candidates, who deposited the fees.Sources said the department reached out to these students before the first phase of admission closed on Friday night.

A higher education department officer said, “Among these students, some have shifted to other courses or are waiting to get into other courses. But, we reached out to all the students in the first list to alert them that if they don’t take admission, they will miss the opportunity for up-gradation.”

Some college principals in the city expressed their concern over the gap between the total allotment and the figure of total admission.

In Asutosh College, 2,583 seats have been allotted out of 3,330 seats, and 1,239 have been filled. In Lady Brabourne College, 750 seats have been allotted for the first round of admission, among which 300 students took admission.

In Maulana Azad College, 823 seats were allotted, and 523 students took admission. In Seth Anandaram Jaipuria College, 2,463, which is the total number of undergraduate seats, have been allotted, and more than 1,250 seats have been filled. In Surendranath College, 2,153 seats have been allotted, and 1,362 students took admission, while the total seats are 3,050.

In Bethune College, out of a total of 678 seats, 500 have been allotted, and around 315 students took admission.

Asutosh College principal, Manas Kabi, said, “It is true that we found a gap between the seat allotment and the figure of total admission. I think there is some confusion among students that impacted the admission process, so in the next round, these things will be cleared to them.”

Surendranath College principal, Indranil Kar said, “Some students are still confused regarding the admission process. So, they need to be guided through various forms regarding the admission procedure.”

Lady Brabourne College principal, Siuli Sarkar said, “The admission procedure is very slow, and total admission is quite less. Even for subjects like Economics and English, which are very popular departments, the number of seats, which have been filled up, is very less, which is surprising for us.”
