  • Kolkata: The engineering departments of Jadavpur University have performed well this placement season, with a student bagging a Rs 1.4-crore offer from a startup firm while four others received packages of Rs 57 lakh each from Google. However, the IT student who received the highest job offer has declined it and has opted for Warner Bros Discovery with a package of more than Rs 25 lakhs.

“I am currently not interested in moving out of the country and settle in the US. So I declined the offer of Rs 1.4 crore from the startup firm. I wanted to stay near my parents and friends. I will be joining Warner Bros Discovery in Bangalore on Monday,” said IT department student Ayush Sharma.

JU placement officer Samita Bhattacharya said: “Despite the market situation, our placement has been very good this time with more than 90% engineering students getting placed. Out of 913 who sat for placement, 830 got offers.”

Computer science and engineering students Sayan Acharya, Debdhriti Roy and Aritra Datta and IT student Arindam Dey secured India-based jobs with packages Rs 57 lakhs each at Google. All of them have joined their office in Bangalore. “Securing this job had been my top-most priority and it was a necessity for me as I have few responsibilities to fulfill as my parents are aging,” said Arindam.

Sayan said: “My profile, which is a bit different, has helped me secure this job. I participated in hackathons and published academic papers because the companies now focus on diverse profiles with leadership qualities and team work experience.” Debdhriti feels that there was pressure and it was a tumultuous journey but it paid off. According to Aritra, it was beyond expectation that he would get placed at Google, which was also his dream job.

Some of the major recruiters this time were PwC, Wells Fargo, Oracle, Deutsche Bank, IDFC, Morgan Stanley, Texas Instruments, Warner Bros Discovery, Airbus, Tata Steel, ExxonMobil, Bechtel, Ab in Bev, Coca-Cola, HSBC, Eveready, Exide, Honeywell, Reliance, Citi Bank, Deloitte, Aditya Birla Group, Samsung and Jindal Group.

JU interim VC Bhaskar Gupta said: “The core engineering departments have performed very well. The credit goes to our students as well as our teachers. Moreover, JU promotes an overall personality development of a student, which also helps a student during placement.”
