  • Kolkata: A 41-year-old attendant hired from an ayah centre in New Town to look after a paralytic bedridden senior citizen and his wife, a cancer patient, was arrested by Techno City police in New Town on Saturday after he had allegedly stolen Rs 12 lakh by using their debit cards.

Biman Dey was recruited by the family living at Uniworld housing complex in New Town in July last year.According to the complaint lodged by the elderly man’s sister in Nov 2023, the man had swiped the cards of both the senior citizens over multiple transactions to steal the amount.

Police said the family realized the theft only after they had terminated the man from work after some dispute.

“The man was terminated from work on Nov 4. On Nov 5, the man’s sister came to the complex to look after them and that is when she noticed multiple large transactions made from the couple’s accounts about which the elderly couple had no knowledge. She lodged the complaint the next day but by then Dey was untraceable,” said a senior officer of Bidhannagar city police.

Probing into the case police reached the Kakdwip address of the man which Dey had submitted with his Aadhar card at the ayah centre. But upon reaching Kakdwip, police couldn’t locate him and found he once used to work at a fishing trawler but no longer lived there. Cops even tried to trace the tower location but couldn’t race him.

“We then found, he had made some calls to a Mumbai number and traced that number to finally locate him at a restaurant in Mumbai where he was working. We arrested him there and brought him back to New Town. He is currently in police custody,” said the officer.

During interrogation the man has told police that he has two children and that the younger son (10) suffers from a medical condition since an accident in the childhood that has left him with limited brain function and mobility.

“The man says he had committed the crime as his son had become extremely sick during that period and needed immediate medical attention. The man said he had used that money for his treatment. However, we are checking his statements,” the officer added.
