  • The Calcutta High Court Bar Association on Monday decided to abstain from all judicial proceedings after a lawyer was allegedly assaulted by police personnel in the Bishnupur area of South 24 Parganas district, saying they will not resume until the “delinquent police officer” is suspended.

According to a member of the Association, sub-inspector Sudipto Sanyal had “assaulted” advocate Sourav Mondal yesterday at around 5 pm, when Mondal had reached the Nepalganj Police outpost to attend to his client. The outpost, where Sanyal is posted, is under the jurisdiction of the Bishnupur police station.

In the notice on Monday, the Bar Association said that the sub-inspector continuously assaulted the advocate, after which, they alleged, he had to be taken to the Amtala Rural Hospital emergency ward for treatment.

The Association said that Sanyal had “falsely implicated” the advocate in a case under section 292 (public nuisance) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and allegedly threatened to falsely accuse him under further narcotic cases.

“He was beaten up by the said policeman without any fault of his own…Tomorrow we will file a writ petition at the high court against the said policeman. Tomorrow, a decision will be taken whether to continue our protest,” advocate and Calcutta High Court Bar Association member Niladri Sekhar Ghosh told The Indian Express.

Mondal has submitted a written complaint to the police along with medical documents and requested police authorities to preserve CCTV footage at the Nepalganj Police outpost.

After learning about the complaint, the bar association took the stern resolution.
