  • Kolkata and South Bengal are expected to experience light to moderate rain with thunderstorms, on Tuesday and Wednesday, while several South Bengal districts are under a heavy rain alert for Tuesday.

As temperatures in the city are predicted to be slightly below normal, Kolkata will see cloudy skies with possible moderate rain on Tuesday. The forecast has predicted heavy rain for Kalimpong and Alipurduar, in North Bengal. The entire region is likely to experience thunderstorms over the next few days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Hooghly, East and West Midnapore, and East Burdwan in South Bengal, and for North Bengal’s Kalimpong and Alipurduar.

The Alipore Meteorological Office’s forecast said that the maximum temperature in Kolkata is likely to be 31 degree Celsius. Alipore received 21.7 mm of rain on Monday. Moderate rain may occur in the city on July 23.

“Kolkata will also see a light to moderate rain and thundershower very likely to occur. Maximum and minimum temperature most likely to be around 31˚C and 26˚C, respectively, with minimum humidity of 91%,” said the weather official.

The weather department said that various South Bengal districts may receive heavy rain. While all districts of South Bengal will receive light rain on July 23, Hooghly, along with East and West Midnapore, and East Burdwan are likely to receive heavy rain.

There is a possibility of heavy rain in North Bengal on Tuesday. Kalimpong and Alipurduar, along with Jalpaiguri are likely to receive heavy rain on July 23.

The five districts of North Bengal– Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri– will continue to experience thunderstorms for now.

Light to moderate rain will continue in all the districts of North Bengal till July 28.

Moderate rain with thunder will continue in Malda and Dinajpur till Wednesday, while the weather forecast shows isolated thunders and showers locally.

“South Bengal will continue to receive rain for the next few days. Due to the favorable position of the monsoon axis, a lot of water vapor has entered from the Bay of Bengal, which will influence the continuous rain in the state. Heavy rain in East Medinipur will continue till Wednesday,” added an official.
