  • Kolkata: An examination of the woman’s body, which was found in a sack floating in a canal near Regent Park on Tuesday, revealed she was still alive when she was stuffed inside the bag and died by drowning. The head bore a deep injury.

Ante-mortem drowning occurs when an individual is still alive at the time of submersion and dies when unable to breathe underwater, raising a question on how this woman, still alive, was put inside the sack.“The woman was still alive when thrown into water, but probably unconscious. There is only mud inside her stomach and she was not physically assaulted,” said police. The victim’s hands had three tattoos, one of ‘Mubarak’ written on one hand and two eagles on the other. “The woman has not been identified yet. We are using the tattoos for a lead. We have some leads from Howrah, but we have reason to believe she lived in either South 24 Parganas or the added areas of Kolkata,” said an officer.

Police and disaster management team fished out the body from under the bridge of Shantinagar canal in Regent Park around 3.10 pm on Tuesday. She had an orange dress and black pants, police said.
