The Siddaramaiah cabinet in Karnataka, another opposition-governed state, has also cleared a proposal calling for abolition of NEET, but it is yet to be passed in the assembly.

While all parties backed the resolution against NEET in the Bengal assembly, BJP opposed the move calling the resolution 'illegal'.

Moving the resolution, Bengal education minister Bratya Basu called for a return to the pre-NEET system when states had the authority to conduct medical entrance examinations.

"All powers were taken away from the states. Thus, this resolution is historic. NEET has put a question mark on the future of millions of students in the country. We believe the responsibility for the joint entrance examination should be returned to the states as it was before 2010-11. The state joint entrance board can do this transparently," Basu said.

He said centralisation of the examination system had been questioned since Narendra Modi was the chief minister of Gujarat.
