  • Kolkata: Export of goods from Bengal to Bangladesh resumed on Wednesday with several of the 1,000 vehicles crossing over to the neighbouring country via Petrapole, signalling resumption of trade between the two countries which came to a halt after unrest in Bangladesh over reforms in quota system.

According to associations of traders, the stand-off in business was resulting in losses to the tune of around Rs 300 crore daily. From tyres to electronic goods and food grains, traders from the state export a large number of goods to Bangladesh. Goods consignment last crossed over to Bangladesh on Friday after almost 1,000 trucks were stranded at Petrapole.

Goods vehicles have started crossing over to Bangladesh from the Hili border in north Bengal, too.

“Export of goods to Bangladesh has resumed which has come as a big relief to the business community in the state,” said Sushil Poddar of Confederation of West Bengal Trade Associations.

“Since last Friday lorries were parked a few kilometres from border. Orders from our clients from Bangladesh have also stopped. But with normalcy getting restored we expect exports to resume like before,” said Ramesh Saraogi, joint secretary of Pulses and Grains Wholesalers in Posta.
