  • Kolkata: The Kolkata Police has written to Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) requesting it to introduce a number of measures — including installation of pavement barriers and replacement of electric poles — in AJC Bose Road school zone between Moulali and Mullick Bazar to curb accidents.

The cops have also suggested the civic body to enhance illumination, set up footpaths and free up the existing ones, besides installation of median concrete verge and creation of refuge islands near schools. The suggestions were submitted by the Park Circus Traffic Guard based on the recommendations of a traffic safety committee that had cops, IIT Kharagpur and Jadavpur University experts. It was constituted to study the accident-prone sites. DCP (traffic) Yeilwad Shrikant Jagannathrao said, “The primary cause of road accidents on AJC Bose Road is the lack of sufficient numbers of pavement barriers, especially between Elliot Road crossing and Park Street (Mullick Bazar Crossing). This not only endangers lives but also hampers movement of vehicles due to indiscriminate crossovers by the pedestrians.” The electric poles near Mallick Bazar and Bijalee Galli are in bad shape.” Installation of median concrete verge has been recommended between Moulali and Elliot Road. Cops have suggested setting up of refuge islands at the intersections of smaller roads close to schools, especially at Bijlee Galli beside the Nonapukur Tram Depot.
