• Justice Chatterji, HC ex-judge who headed July 21 panel, dies

  • Kolkata: Retired Justice Susanta Chatterji, who had served as a judge at Calcutta High Court and Orissa HC, died at his Howrah residence on Thursday. He was 87.

    CM Mamata Banerjee posted on social media that Justice Chatterji served both the courts with distinction. “He was also appointed by our Government to head the Commission engaged to inquire into the affairs related to the massacre on 21st July 1993,” the CM wrote.The commission had called the incident “worse than the Jallianwala Bagh massacre” and awarded Rs 25 lakh compensation to the family of the deceased. Police fired upon a Youth Congress rally led by Banerjee in 1993 near Metro Cinema in Central Kolkata. Thirteen people lost their lives.

    Born on April 2, 1937, Chatterji became an advocate in 1961 at Howrah District Court and practised at Calcutta HC in civil and constitutional matters. He became judge of Calcutta HC on Jan 17, 1986. He later became Chief Justice of Orissa HC. tnn
