According to police, a group of people tied 48-year-old Manik Roy to a tree and beat him with rods and sticks on Wednesday night near his house at Hathat colony under Khargrabari-1 gram panchayat of Maynaguri in Jalpaiguri district.

After Roy’s family alerted the police, he was rescued and brought to Jalpaiguri General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries later.

According to the Congress, Roy, an active worker of the party was forced to leave his house after the Lok Sabha polls as he started getting threats from TMC-backed goons.

“Roy started to stay in Siliguri town where he worked as a security guard. Last Sunday, he returned home. But TMC-backed goons tied him to a tree and beat him up. This is the ruling party’s terror in Bengal,” said Soumya Aich Roy, chairman outreach and communication, state Congress.

“We have registered a case on the basis of a complaint by the victim’s wife. So far, we have arrested five persons. The investigation is on,” said a senior police officer of Jalpaiguri.
