• Min calls for India-Bhutan joint panel to curb flooding

  • Kolkata: Bengal’s parliamentary affairs minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay on Friday moved a resolution for an India-Bhutan Joint River Commission for controlling floods in transboundary rivers. Chattopadhyay said in his resolution, “Centre has been unilaterally engaging with Bangladesh on finalising the agreements on the sharing of Ganga and Teesta water without any consultation with state govt and showing no concern for the people of Bengal.”

Chattopadhyay said that rivers in Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri districts swell due to the sudden release of water from dams in Bhutan.Opposing the resolution, BJP’s Siliguri representative Shankar Ghosh said the issue of transboundary rivers did not fall under the jurisdiction of the House, and moving such a resolution was unethical and unconstitutional. Ghosh alleged rampant illegal mining of natural resources in north Bengal by miscreants under the political patronage of TMC was equally responsible for such disasters.

Manas Bhunia, the minister for irrigation and waterways, said, “It is inhuman not to move a resolution when our people are suffering due to the sudden release of water from dams in Bhutan and Sikkim.” He alleged that BJP was conspiring to divide Bengal instead of thinking about people’s problems.
