  • Kolkata: The political storm over carving out Union Territories inside Bengal continued on Friday with BJP’s Murshidabad MLA Gouri Shankar Ghosh calling for UT status for Murshidabad, drawing a sharp reaction from Trinamool. Ghosh claimed he had raised making Murshidabad a UT in 2022.

Ghosh told TOI that he had written to both Union home minister Amit Shah and then Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankhar to declare Murshidabad district a UT as there was regular infiltration from Bangladesh, including that of “jihadis”.“As the border doesn’t have fencing, it is easy to enter India. Moreover, there is major lawlessness in Murshidabad, so I had floated the concept of UT,” he said.

Calling the proposals “bogus”, former Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP Kunal Ghosh said people had already rejected BJP in the Lok Sabha polls and would oppose any move to split Bengal. “BJP is trying to divide Bengal with a particular purpose. They lost in the LS polls and are facing in-fighting, so now they are trying to split Bengal. They are even trying to fan religious sentiments to reach their goal. Bengal cannot be divided at any cost,” he said.

Ghosh added: “We condemn this. Trinamool will not allow any division of Bengal. It is BJP’s strategy to put up an economic blockade. They are planning the division as a vendetta.”
