  • Kolkata: An undertrial died at Dum Dum Central Correctional Home on Saturday, leading to protests by his family, alleging negligence by jail officials.

But jail officials denied the allegation and said Raj Dutta fell seriously ill while returning from a Barasat court and later, died in the jail hospital. The resident of Baguiati’s Arjunpur was held for murder.

His family alleged Dutta was framed and that he had fallen ill in judicial custody, too. “A Barasat court ordered his treatment but jail officials did not take initiative. Recently, he had high fever and vomited blood. Even on Saturday, he wasn’t taken to hospital,” said Pratima, his sister, seeking a probe. A jail official said, “Treatment was arranged for him.” —Sanjib Chakrabarty
