  • Kolkata: KMC, which is preparing a report on the findings of a hawker survey at prime hawking zones across the city, will send it to the chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s office. The CM is expected to hold a review meeting based on this report, said mayor Firhad Hakim.

Hakim on Saturday said he had a talk with the CM a couple of days ago on the hawker issue.“The CM is supposed to hold a review meeting once the survey report is submitted,” said Hakim.

After completing the first phase of survey in Gariahat, New Market and Hatibagan, KMC on Thursday started the second phase in central Kolkata, including areas like Sealdah, Bowbazar, College Street, Chandni Chowk and S N Banerjee Road.

According to a KMC official, around 180 civic employees will visit these areas over the next eight days to gather information about encroachment of the carriageways and pavements by hawkers. A section of these employees was roped in by the civic brass during the first phase of the survey, which was initiated after the CM asked the civic authorities to make sure that the carriageways and the pavements are not encroached upon under any circumstances.
