  • Kolkata: Armed robbers assaulted a priest and looted gold and silver ornaments and Rs 18,000 in cash, from a temple in the Nadial area of Port division early on Sunday.

According to police, a gang of three to four persons, all of them in their forties, in Bermuda shorts and T-shirts, raided the temple. It was apparent that they knew that a lone priest stays there at night with no security guards around.“They barged into the Kanchantala Kali temple by cutting the iron grill. When the priest tried to resist, he was assaulted and tied up,” said a senior officer.

“We are checking the CCTV footage and activating our sources to check the movement of local criminals. An alert has been sent to Diamond Harbour police too,” said an investigating officer. DC (Port) Harikrishna Pai said the probe was on to ascertain local links from the area. Sleuths from Nadial PS and the detective department have launched investigation into the matter.
