Kolkata: Teen lovers kill girl's mom, 'threatened' dad keeps mum since June 6

Image used for representative purpose only KOLKATA: A 14-year-old girl and her boyfriend, also a teenager, strangled the girl's 54-year-old mother to death, obtained a natural death certificate from a local Behala doctor and then cremated the body last month, managing to keep everything under wraps till the girl's dad finally broke the story to a neighbour on Sunday night.
The neighbour alerted the cops, leading the latter to detain both the alleged killers for the crime committed on June 6.The two will be produced before the Juvenile Justice board on Tuesday.
The girl and her boyfriend had threatened or convinced her father into keeping quiet all this while, cops said. But the man spoke to a neighbour on Sunday, leading to the unravelling of a crime that has shocked the entire neighbourhood as well as the investigators themselves. The two teeangers, officials said, had confessed to the crime. But there were several loose ends that needed to be tied up, including the doctor's role in giving the natural death certificate, investigators said.
Senior cops said this crime was a throwback to the Sajal Barui case of 1993. Barui was convicted of killing his dad, stepmom and stepbrother and served a prison term till 2010.
The Behala girl, investigators said, met the boy on Facebook one and a half years ago. "But her family did not accept the relationship and her mother used to scold her regularly. This prompted them to plot the murder," an official said, adding that both of them had confessed to the crime.
The girl called the boy to her home on June 6 night when both the girl's parents were sleeping, cops said, adding that the boy strangulated the girl's mother and then punched her repeatedly on the chest to make sure that she had died. They then threatened the girl's father into keeping quiet, cops said, but added there were a few things that did not add up.
The teenagers apparently called a local doctor the next morning, who gave them a certificate of natural death. Neighbours were then informed and the body was cremated. The girl's father has claimed to cops that he was too scared to speak but finally told a neighbour on Sunday night.
It was he who called the boy home on Monday and cops moved in after he arrived, detaining both teenagers.
Investigators said they were talking to the girl's dad and trying to trace the Behala doctor who certified the murder to be a "natural death".
