• JU show-cause notice to over 20 for 2023 ragging

  • Kolkata: Eleven months after the death of a fresher, who was a victim of ragging and died after a fall from Main Hostel on Aug 10 last year, Jadavpur University has issued show-cause notices to students who were found guilty in the university’s probe.

    Notices have been issued to at least four students, who have been recommended a four-semester suspension by the internal probe panel and anti-ragging committee for their direct involvement in criminal conspiracy.At least 20, who were recommended suspension in one semester, were also issued notices. All are boarders of A2 block. The panels have also recommended them to be barred from the hostel permanently.

    According to anti-ragging panel’s recommendation, the ex-Fetsu chairperson, who is a PhD scholar, has also been show-caused. It has recommended six-month suspension for him. Interim VC Bhaskar Gupta said, “We have issued show-cause notices to those who have been implicated. They will be given 15 days to defend themselves.”

    Four, who were recommended expulsion, and two, who were recommended either four- or one-semester suspension, could not be issued notices as they are in judicial custody. Ex-students, who were also found guilty, were not issued any notice.
