• Man tries to drive away with cab, crushes owner

  • Kolkata: A 52-year-old cab owner lost his life while trying to prevent the theft of his taxi on Tuesday morning. The incident took place around 7.30 am in front of Rajasthan Guest House on Zakaria Street in central Kolkata. The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Firoz , a resident of Raj Mohan Street in the same area.

    The accused has been nabbed by cops and identified as Javed Ahmed (29).Based on a complaint by Firoz’s son, Jorasanko PS has registered a case under BNS under charges of theft and culpable homicide.

    According to police, Firoz was busy washing his car when he accidentally left the keys inside the vehicle. Suddenly, accused Ahmed got into the driver’s seat, started the engine and tried to drive away. Firoz, who was filling water from a nearby tap, turned around after hearing the sound of engine. He also shouted ‘thief-thief’, attracting the attention of locals.

    Firoz then approached the driver’s window and turned the steering wheel to the right to prevent Ahmed from escaping. The accused then lost control over the vehicle, which collided with a light post. Firoz was severely injured as he got caught between the car and the post. He was taken to the Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

    Locals caught the accused and handed him over to Jorasanko cops. Asif Iqbal, a local resident, said, “I heard the driver was changing the oil. At that time, a thief came and tried to drive away with the car. When the owner tried to stop him, he got injured. He later died in hospital.”

    “Firoz sustained severe injuries on chest and right abdomen. The vehicle was seized from the spot and the accused detained from scene of crime. Arrangement has been made to conduct inquest and post mortem. A case has been initiated under sections 303(2), 62 and 105 of BNS,” said additional CP (I) Murlidhar Sharma.
