  • Kolkata: After almost two months, Kolkata recorded a deceased organ donation, —10th so far this year—where two kidneys of the donor were transplanted into two patients on Tuesday night.

The donor, Kumkum Chakraborty (66), had suffered a brain stroke at her Alipurduar home seven days ago. After retrieving her kidneys, cornea and skin, Chakraborty’s family donated her body to the anatomy department of the Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGMER).

Chakraborty was a former headmistress of Alipurduar Girls’ Higher Secondary School. After suffering the brain stroke, she was admitted to a local health facility. When her condition kept deteriorating, she was shifted to IPGMER, where her son is pursuing post-graduation in nephrology. Despite intensive medical support, she suffered a brain stem death.

The donor’s kin said that prior to her death, Chakraborty had expressed her wish of donating her organs to help others.“The primary reason for shifting my mother was for better medical care. But when a patient suffers brain death, there is nothing that doctors can do. Hence, I thought bringing her to Kolkata would facilitate in fulfilling her last wishes. Being a part of the medical fraternity, I have seen how a donated organ can give a fresh lease of life to the dying,” said son Tathagata Mukherjee, a third-year postgraduate student of nephrology.

ROTTO (east) was informed after doctors at IPGMER (SSKM) declared her brain dead. The initial plan was to retrieve all viable organs, but doctors found only the two kidneys fit for transplant. SSKM retained one kidney, while the second one was allocated to RN Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences.
