  • Kolkata: Several shower spells between Monday night and Tuesday evening added 44.3 mm of rain to the city’s July rain kitty, narrowing down the shortage further. The Met office expects more rain, including some heavy spells on Thursday. The rain also pushed the mercury below the normal mark.

According to Met office, the monsoon trough is currently over this region, making the conditions conducive for Kolkata and other south Bengal districts to get spells of rain.A cyclonic circulation may also develop by Thursday, said the Met office.

“Conditions are now favourable for daily rain activities. Adding to it will be a cyclonic circulation which is taking shape over our region. This system may trigger heavy rain in Kolkata on Thursday,” said H R Biswas, head of the weather section at Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata.

The other districts where the Met office has predicted heavy rain on Thursday are South and North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, East and West Midnapore, East Burdwan and Bankura.

Till Tuesday Kolkata received 320.3 mm of rain this July against the normal July rain count of 387.4 mm — a deficit of 15%.
