  • Kolkata: Colleges on Wednesday started the physical verification of documents of undergraduate candidates who applied on the centralised admission portal. This process, under which the students will confirm they will pursue the courses they chose and paid for online, will be on till next Tuesday.

The first day saw a low turnout at many colleges and principals attributed it to confusion around the new system.“We called 500 students, but only around 250 reported. We expect more students from Thursday. The last day will be the mop-up round,” said Surendranath principal Indranil Kar. “The low turnout could be because some are still confused. We are in touch with them.”

According to the new norms, if a student does not come for physical check of documents, their admission will be cancelled. A higher education department official said, “After the physical verification, we will get the actual number of seats filled up, following which we will hold another mop-up round. We will ask students to get a cancellation certificate if they don’t confirm the seats.”

Most colleges have kept Aug 6 aside for interested students, who will miss their turn for physical check of papers during the week. “Of our 16 departments, verification will be held for four every day. The last day will be for those who will miss their turns in between,” said a Bethune College official. “Some students came on Wednesday though it wasn’t their turn. We still allowed them as many came from far and most were not clear about the process.” Around 65 students reported the first day.

At Bangabasi College, 500 out of the 800 candidates, called for the check, reported, and the number at Seth Anandaram Jaipuria was 500, too. At Netaji Nagar Day College, 90 out of 193 students turned up. Principal Sonali Banerjee (Jash) said, “Subject-wise slots for the four-year course are slated from Thursday, after which we expect a good number. All will get a chance twice.”
