  • Kolkata: The urban development and municipal affairs department has approved funding of Rs 10 crore for the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) to set up two steel bridges over canals — one between EM Bypass and Chowbhaga Road across TP canal and another replacing the wooden bridge across Town Head canal on Mir Meher Ali Lane in Tangra.

Rs 4.3 crore has been allocated for a 22-m long and 5.5-m wide steel bridge over Town Head canal. “A new bridge was proposed as the old wooden bridge was damaged. Vehicles will be able to use the new bridge, which will also boost connectivity in the area,” said local councillor Jiban Saha.

The bridge across TP canal will be a 25-m long steel composite bridge and will provide an alternative road parallel to Anandapur Road.

KMDA will soon initiate the process to engage agencies to set up the bridges. The authorities are also preparing a detailed project report for setting up another Bailey bridge over Kestopur canal, connecting VIP Road with Salt Lake.
