  • Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Wednesday admitted an election petition by BJP’s Basirhat candidate Rekha Patra and directed that notices be issued to all parties concerned — from the Bengal CEO to the constituency’s MP, Sk Nurul Islam.

In her petition, Patra alleged suppression of material facts by the Trinamool candidate during the Lok Saba polls, which the BJP nominee lost to Islam by a margin of over 3 lakh votes. She sought the court’s direction for preservation and forensic audit of CCTV footage on polling day.

Justice Krishna Rao admitted the petition following an official note from the superintendent in the HC’s protocol department stating that the plea didn’t suffer any defect under the election rules.

The HC directed preservation of all documents, papers, devices, CCTV footage and video recordings related to the Basirhat elections and fixed the next hearing on Sept 4.
