  • Kolkata: Metro Railway clarified it will operate trains in the Orange Line — between New Garia and Ruby — on weekdays but not on weekends. The officials had on Tuesday said that while more trains would be operated between Monday and Friday, both in the morning and in the evening, the services were also being extended to Saturday.

“After deliberating on the announcement that the Orange Line would run on Saturdays, we realized some work for installing the Communication Based Train Control or the CBTC signalling system is still left and the Saturdays would be needed to complete it,” said Metro Railway CPRO Kausik Mitra, adding that on weekdays, the services will be available between 8 am and 8 pm.

The Orange Line now runs a truncated 5.4-km stretch on electronic interlocking or EI signalling system, which is the first stage of CBTC signalling system. The corridor will eventually cover 29-km from New Garia to the airport and run on the advanced CBTC signalling.
