• Heavy rain to lash Kolkata and South Bengal districts from today: IMD

  • The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall across South Bengal until Friday. Kolkata and its suburbs were drenched in heavy rain on Thursday, which also caused traffic congestion and disrupted daily routines.

    Paschim Medinipur and Purba Bardhaman districts are expected to be particularly hard hit, with the potential for extremely heavy downpours.

    As per the forecast, all districts of South Bengal are expected to witness rain on Thursday. Rain may occur throughout the day on Friday as well. The temperature may drop slightly but relative humidity will increase discomfort.

    “All districts of South Bengal are likely to experience rain throughout the day on Thursday. Rainfall may decrease from Saturday,” said an official.

    While heavy rain is likely to occur at one or two places in Kolkata on Thursday, relatively heavy rain may occur in Howrah, North and South 24 Parganas, East Medinipur, East Burdwan and Bankura districts.

    Purulia, West Burdwan, Murshidabad and Birbhum may experience heavy rain on Friday. Light to moderate rain with thundershowers is likely over other districts including Kolkata. Rainfall will reduce from Saturday, according to the IMD.

    Forecast for North Bengal

    Heavy rain is likely only in Kalimpong on Thursday. Rain with thunder may occur over Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, Malda, North and South Dinajpur districts. Scattered heavy rain is likely over Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, Kalimpong on Friday. Scattered rain is also forecast in the upper five districts of North Bengal. Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and North Dinajpur are likely to experience heavy rain on Saturday.

    Forecast for Kolkata

    The IMD has forecast a generally cloudy sky with a few spells of rain or thundershower. The maximum and minimum temperatures are most likely to be around 30˚C and 26˚C, respectively.

    The maximum relative humidity is likely to be 95 per cent and the minimum relative humidity is 80 per cent

    In the 24 hours till 6.30 am on Thursday, 009.4 mm of rainfall was recorded.
