  • Kolkata: The hooliganism at the EM Bypass pub owes its genesis to an incident that took place a few days ago, when a local syndicate, holding a meeting regarding the “transfer of a plot”, had requested for drinks after 2 am. After the bar authorities refused to oblige, a commotion ensued and the employees were threatened, one of them claimed on Friday.

However, police have rubbished syndicate links, claiming that the incident played out on Monday night itself with main accused Sanjay Das being stopped from entering the bar “over some issues”.This led to him getting involved in a fight with the bouncers and launch the revenge attack. Sanjay has reportedly confessed to the brawl during his interrogation.

After order from Lalbazar, the cops have now decided to slap stringent sections against the accused. On Friday, cops added attempt to murder charge and Section 9 of The West Bengal Maintenance of Public Property Act, which attract a maximum of life imprisonment and a minimum of 10 years in prison if proven guilty. “In Anandpur bar case, Section 109 BNS (attempt to murder) and Section 9 WBMPO Act for destruction of private property were added. The sections now read as 189(3)/126(2)/115(2)/118/324(2)/3(5)/109 of BNS and Section 9 of WBMPO Act, 1972,” said DC (East) Arish Bilal.

Moreover, cops on Friday arrested two more persons connected to the incident, taking the total number of arrests in this case to seven. “They have been identified as Krishna Mondal alias Sushil (35) and Sushanta Naskar (29), both residents of IFB Khalpar,” said an officer.

According to police sources, there is a local club near the Tagore Park bus stand that serves as the office of the local syndicate. Biswajit Mandal alias Tiger, Abhijit Das alias Lombu, Dipankar Das, Mahendra Prasad Gupta and Sanjay, all arrested in connection with the bar attack, are reportedly members of this club. The family of Biswajit has already claimed that her was summoned that night for an important syndicate meeting.

Lalbazar has also formed teams — consisting officers from east, southeast and Jadavpur divisions along with the DD — to ensure that no criminal activities are carried around the pubs.
