  • Kolkata: State education minister Bratya Basu on Saturday said if the Supreme Court’s order is followed, the interim vice chancellor of Calcutta University should not enter the university. This comes a day after TMCP members kept CU officials, including interim VC Santa Dutta and registrar Debashish Das, gheraoed till late at night, protesting against the “syndicate meeting being held without the higher education department’s nod”.

Interacting with reporters on the sidelines of an event at Scottish Church College, Basu said that he was not aware of what the students have done. But he said whatever they were saying in the media was correct.

“If the Supreme Court’s order is followed, she should not enter the university. She is still using a government blue light car… Some illegal infiltrators are entering the university under the guise of the vice-chancellor. Immediate action should be taken against them. I hope that the honourable Supreme Court will take action against those who are taking all the govt benefits while disregarding the court’s orders,” Basu said.

Dutta said, “My actions are as per law and are in accordance with high court’s and the Supreme Court’s order.”

Ahead of the beginning of the first-year undergraduate classes across the state, the minister said that ragging is a menace and the authority should take strict action to curb this.

“The current interim VC of Jadavpur University has taken various measures to curb ragging on the campus. He is in regular contact with me and has been informing me about the steps that are being taken from time to time.” He advised senior students to love juniors and also told juniors to respect and love their seniors.
