  • Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation buildings department will need to focus on the city’s dilapidated buildings in the wake of spells of rain. However, the KMC buildings department officials find it difficult to convince tenants of the vulnerable buildings to shift to a safer place to save their lives, said mayor Firhad Hakim on Saturday.

Hakim on Saturday received a call from the owner of a Burrabazar residenceexpressing concern over the fate of tenants of his building that is listed as an insecure building.According to the caller, he was interested in the redevelopment of the building, but the tenants were not ready to shift.

Hakim said, KMC had made it a rule to offer the tenants of the rickety buildings a possession certificate if they are willing to shift to facilitate reconstruction of the building. “We are ready to protect the interests of the tenants, but they have to respond. Otherwise, their life will be at stake,” he added.
