  • Amid water logging and floods in the southern part of West Bengal, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that heavy and moderate rainfall in the area will continue till at least Saturday.

This warning comes after the rain has disrupted normal life for people residing in the areas over the past two days. In the state’s Asansol city, an employee of a private company died Friday night after being admitted to hospital as a car he was in got waterlogged.

At Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport on Saturday, parking stands have been affected by waterlogging, with additional pumps being deployed to drain the area. However, flights have not been disrupted.

Now, heavy to very heavy rain is expected in seven districts, including Bankura, East Burdwan, Hooghly, Howrah, Nadia, South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas. Heavy rain is reportedly also to occur in Kolkata.

The IMD also issued a yellow alert for northern West Bengal on Saturday, saying that rainfall of 7-11 cm is likely to happen in one or two areas of the districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Coochbehar.

This means there are also chances of an increase in the water levels of the North Bengal rivers Teesta, Torsha, and Jaldhaka among others.

“The low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand moved west-northwestwards, intensified into a depression, and lay centered at 5.30 pm on August 2,” stated the IMD.

It further said, “It is likely to move west-northwestwards across Jharkhand, southeast Uttar Pradesh, east Madhya Pradesh and north Chhattisgarh in the next 48 hours.”
