  • Students from TMCP, the students’ wing of Trinamool Congress, gheraoed Calcutta University’s Interim Vice-Chancellor Shanta Dutta on its College Street campus, allegedly locking the two main gates, another gate, and the door of the syndicate room, in which Datta was holding a meeting. The students alleged that she should not have been holding the meeting since her term “has expired”.

Protestors also allegedly climbed on the bonnet of her car.

After the incident on Friday, Dutta informed Jorasanko police, following which they entered the campus late at night. The vice-chancellor came out amidst strong protests at around midnight.

TMCP leader Abhirup Chakraborty claimed that Governor C V Ananda Bose nominated Interim Vice-Chancellor Shanta Dutta. “She has no right to hold a meeting because she continues to work illegally even after passing the age of service,” he said.

“We are protesting the decision to convene a syndicate meeting, which we term as illegal. We have locked the VC’s room and did not allow her to enter the office,” Chakraborty added.

Chakraborty also told PTI that the Supreme Court has ordered the formation of a committee to appoint permanent vice-chancellors for Calcutta University and other state-run universities.

Despite allegations from the State Education Department that Governor CV Ananda Bose had not consulted with them, Shanta Dutta had been formally appointed as interim vice-chancellor for six months.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Bratya Basu said, “I don’t know what TMCP did in Calcutta University but I must say what the interim VC is doing is absolutely illegal. She can’t remain as VC after her tenure is over.”
