  • Kolkata: The Bengal govt is set to introduce Netaji’s ‘Taruner Swapna’ in the syllabus for Class X and Swami Vivekananda’s ‘His Call To The Nation’ for Class XI from the 2025 academic session. These two will be included as non-evaluative supplementary reading books.

The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) on Monday issued a notice with a signature of president Chiranjib Bhattacharjee asking all the heads of institutions to include ‘His Call To The Nation’ in the Class XI curriculum as recommended by the chairman, expert committee. The book will be circulated free of cost to the students.

The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) also circulated a notice to the school heads that ‘Taruner Swapna’ written by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose be included in the Class X school syllabus from the next session which will be considered as non-evaluative supplementary book. WBBSE president Ramanuj Ganguly said that the decision had been made based on an order from the school education department.

Sources said, both the books are set to be introduced in the school curriculum for the character building of school children who are on the verge of selecting their future path and passing through their adolescence. A school education department officer said, “These books are considered as the best books to learn values and morals at the school level which could help them fix their goal through a right trajectory. These books will be there in the course curriculum but will not be an extra burden for the students.”

The move came in the backdrop of a statement made by CM Mamata Banerjee in 2022 during an address on the teacher’s day programme where she expressed her interest to include ‘morality’ in the school syllabus.
