  • Kolkata: City cops have called up 250 persons — owners of social media profiles and handles — and warned them of strict legal action for allegedly posting “offensive” material about the emerging situation in Bangladesh on the internet.

While most of them were fake, some of them were deemed to hurt sentiments, said sources. Cops said those sharing the posts have been asked to take them down.

The cyber cell of Kolkata Police has also asked social media giants to red flag certain posts.A few social media groups are being closely watched, said sources. “We have told them that we will lodge non-bailable cases under BNS and the IT Act if they do not stop. We continued calling up people, asking them to refrain from sharing certain posts,” said an officer.

Kolkata Police, along with CID, continued to flag down fake posts, an exercise that cops began on Aug 4.
