  • Kolkata: Facing the massive challenge of rising cyber crimes through social media, Kolkata Police met officials from Whatsapp and Facebook on Monday in an effort to learn basic technicalities that can help them solve cases faster.

The cops claimed that they were also trying to develop better coordination and technical expertise, but also seek help from them in averting possible crimes and suicides. The tie-up with Facebook, over the years, has been especially helpful in stopping suicides.

According to sources, the two social media giants also organized a training session with senior cops — and those in the Lalbazar and divisional cyber cells — that aimed to make them aware of the latest technology and trends that can prove useful in solving cybercrimes.

The thrust, claimed cops, was on training cops for Meta and Coin DX for crypto currency related crimes.

“A surge in phishing attacks, ransomware attacks was reported after Covid, when people mostly worked from home. To counter new age cybercriminals, more training, crisis management plan, cyber security mock drills and exercises to enable assessment of cyber security posture are needed,” said an officer who attended the programme.
