  • The Alipore Weather Department has issued a heavy rain warning for five districts in North Bengal — Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar — for Wednesday and Thursday.

This intense rainfall is expected to persist throughout the week, raising concerns about landslides, reduced visibility, and rising river levels. Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to remain vigilant.

According to the forecast, a cyclone over Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal, coupled with the monsoon axis shifting towards the Bay of Bengal, is contributing to the increased rainfall.

In contrast, South Bengal is predicted to experience lighter rainfall, with thunderstorms likely in Hooghly, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and parts of Nadia on Wednesday. Although heavy rain is unlikely on Wednesday and Thursday, the situation may change over the weekend, the weather department said.

According to the weather department, Kolkata and its surrounding areas can expect generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain or thunderstorms over the next 24 hours. Temperatures are predicted to range between 27 and 32 degrees Celsius.

Residents are “advised” to stay updated on the latest forecasts and take necessary precautions to ensure safety, it said.
