  • Almost a month after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sent a proposal to Raj Bhavan for a Cabinet reshuffle, Governor C V Ananda Bose on Wednesday gave his assent, effecting the change in portfolios of four ministers.

While no one was dropped or inducted into the Council of Ministers, some of the ministers have been entrusted with additional responsibilities.

Senior Trinamool Congress leader and Water Resources Minister Manas Bhuniya has been given the additional charge of the Irrigation and Waterways Department, which was held by Partha Bhowmik, who was elected to Lok Sabha from Barrackpore in June.

Babul Supriyo has been given the charge of the Department of Public Enterprises and Industrial Reconstruction, in addition to the existing Information Technology and Electronics Department.

However, the Department of Non-Conventional and Renewable Energy Sources has been taken away from Supriyo and allotted to Md Ghulam Rabbani.

The Environment Department (Independent Charge), held by Rabbani, has been given to senior minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, who already holds the independent charges of Finance and Programme Monitoring departments.

Bhattacharya is also the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Land and Land Reforms, Refugee Relief and Rehabilitation, and Planning and Statistics departments.

However, the notification released by the state Home Department made no mention of the portfolio of the Correctional (Jail) Administration Department, which was held by Akhil Giri who resigned on Monday.

Giri was asked by his party to resign after he verbally abused a woman officer of a forest department official last week. Governor Bose accepted his resignation on Tuesday.

“The chief minister has taken charge of the Correctional Administration Department. Later, within a month or so, someone will be deputed for this department,” a senior official at the state secretariat said.
